OUR COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY:
USING BOVAER® AT NAPCO

At the North Australian Pastoral Company (NAPCo), we are committed to producing safe, sustainable and high-quality beef while protecting the environment for future generations. As part of our sustainability efforts, we have incorporated Bovaer® into several trials, exploring its potential to significantly reduce methane emissions from cattle.

Below, we address common questions and concerns about Bovaer®, its safety and its role in sustainable beef production.

What is Bovaer®?

Bovaer® is an innovative feed supplement developed to reduce methane emissions from cattle. It works by inhibiting a specific enzyme in the stomachs of ruminant animals, naturally reducing methane production during digestion.

Only a very small amount – less than a quarter of a teaspoon per cow per day – is required, making Bovaer® an efficient and highly targeted solution to address the environmental impact of livestock production.

Why is NAPCo Using Bovaer®?

As farmers committed to sustainability, we continuously seek innovative solutions to reduce our environmental impact. Bovaer® is one of the most effective tools available for reducing methane emissions from cattle.

We already breed low methane-emission cattle, and Bovaer® complements these efforts. A small amount added to feed can reduce methane emissions by up to 60% or more. This approach aligns with our goal of providing a sustainable future for our children, grandchildren and the planet.

Feed additives like Bovaer® are also a key part of the Australian government’s strategy to reduce agricultural emissions. By incorporating Bovaer®, we are proud to lead the way in addressing climate change challenges in the beef industry.

Is Bovaer® Safe?

Yes, Bovaer® has undergone rigorous safety testing over many years and has been approved for use in 65 countries, including Australia. It meets some of the highest safety standards globally, with support from over 100 peer-reviewed research papers and extensive collaboration with regulatory bodies.

Regulatory authorities, including the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), confirm that Bovaer® is safe for livestock, the environment and consumers.

Safety for Human Consumption

One common question is whether Bovaer® impacts the safety of beef. The answer is simple: Bovaer® does not pass into the meat or milk. Studies, including those supported by Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA), confirm that beef produced from cattle supplemented with Bovaer® retains its natural quality, flavour and safety for human consumption.

Long-Term Health

We understand concerns about potential long-term health impacts. Bovaer® is one of the most thoroughly tested feed supplements available, with assessments by leading global and Australian regulatory authorities. These evaluations confirm that Bovaer® poses no risk to consumer health, even with long-term use in livestock feed.

Our Commitment to Research and Collaboration

At NAPCo, the safety and wellbeing of our animals and people are paramount. We base all decisions on sound scientific research and collaborate with organisations like MLA to ensure that we meet the highest standards in sustainability and safety.
